| Sheffield 50+ Sheffield 50+ is the voice of older people in Sheffield. It was set up as part of a government pilot – (BGOP, Better Government for Older People) – with the help of Sheffield City Council. It was launched in 2000. We now have around 2500 members but of course, we would like more. The more members there are, the bigger the voice of older people. Congress Elders are elected from membership and Congress elects the management team. Congress meets monthly in the Town Hall’s council chamber. It is a democratic and non-political organisation. We work in partnership with numerous organisations including the Police, Fire Service, Sheffield Homes, Sheffield First, various universities and local groups. We attend Community Assemblies and work with local councillors. There are three Congress Elders in each area of the city. I am one of the Graves Park Elders, and now that we have Community Assemblies, I come into contact with councillors from Graves Park, Gleadless Valley, Beauchief and Nether Edge. We enhance policies and practices especially for those less able to speak for themselves. So – why become a member of Sheffield 50+? It’s free for life. Anyone who lives or works in Sheffield can join. Just one or two Interesting Facts
